Known as the Windy City, Chicago is the largest city in the Midwest, recognized for its rich history of fame. In the world of wallets, Chicago, where the Ashland Leather and Horween Tannery locate their business, provides a wonderful pairing. Many requests were received for the Ashland Leather Capone Money Clip wallet.

All Ashland Leather wallets are made with Horween leather, which has an amazing smell. As always, Ashland produces a great quality product. The Ashland Leather Capone Money Clip wallet has two exterior quick access card slots, one on the front, and the other on the back. On the interior, there are an additional two card slots, one on each side. Moreover, all these card slots have a capacity to accommodate one to four cards. Therefore, this wallet can fit in quite a few cards. In addition, there is a money clip which can hold up to 30 notes, as indicated by the company.

The card and cash insertion test was performed with two cards per slot, summing up to eight, and a bunch of notes. The larger and taller currencies, such as the yen and the larger Euro notes did not fit very well. A minimalist card option on this wallet would reasonably be eight to 10, while the company states that it can hold up to 16 cards and 30 notes. Probably once it breaks in, the recommended number will be fine. This wallet is designed and made in the United States, Chicago specifically, as mentioned, they are located right next door at the Horween Tannery. The consistency of their products can truly be observed after getting familiar with Ashland Leather. Moreover, their wallets have names all related to the Chicago area, the reviewed wallet is the Al Capone, named after the United States Prohibition Era gangster, an empire builder.

The wallet is full grain, vegetable tanned, Horween English tan Dublin Leather. It is a four ounce leather. It is not the slimmest money clip wallet that can be found out there; however, the quality means that it will last a lifetime. It’s hand waxed and burnished edges are not prominent, but just enough to make this nice looking and pleasant feeling.

Often with money clip wallets, the clip can get in the way of card access. This wallet shows how close the cards are to the money clip. However, the design accommodates opening up the wallet with the exterior cards, preventing this from being a problem.

The money clip itself has a couple of interesting things. It inserts in a separate area and if pulled out, it does not come out easily, because it has what appears to be two-sided tape which provides the ability to stay in the slot. That is good attention to detail, as often, one of the problems with money clips is that they go into such slots, and they just come out super easy. The other interesting feature is that this money clip is not like others. A lot of money clips become loose over time and require tightening in order to stay in place. The money clip provided by Ashland is different, it has excellent tension and is a solid shaft that is not flexible. It does not work off of a spring that would need to be tightened all the time. It simply is a better design.

Because of the quality of the wallet and the attention that goes into its detail, possibilities to see a money clip that would evolve can emerge, similar to what is seen with the Farrah wallet or with the Mitchell wallet.

The measurements of the wallet are 4.5 x 3 x 0.4″, and it weighs 79g. The quality is something both Phil Kalas and Dan Cordova of Ashland worked hard to find. For the final score, the Ashland Leather Capone wallet scores 5 for the quality, 3 for the price, with features and usability each a 4, and 5 for the perception, giving a strong score of 4.2 out of 5.
