We’ve done several reviews of the FOCX lineup of wallets and we have the R3 Purist wallet, so let’s get into it.
This comes in the colors wood, black, cognac or brown. We don’t have any features on the exterior other than the elastic strap that holds it together. If we open it up, we immediately see a card slot with a pull strap to access the cards. It has a capacity of 10 cards which are housed in the larger elastic that wraps around them. You can have one card, or 10 cards, whatever it is, the larger piece of elastic facilitates it.
If we unfold the waller further it also provides cash wrap functionality. Notice this opens up twice, and we’ll compare this to the R1 and R2, but the R3 really gives us a full cash compartment, able to handle up to 10 notes. No folding of currency is needed.
It measures 3.5 by 2.5 by 0.6, and it weighs 33 grams. I successfully placed six cards and eight notes in the wallet using various different currencies, including the larger Euro and Yen which had no issues. It is designed and made in Germany from a full grain veg tan leather. It’s reasonably priced and very easy to use, although the key ring is a little distracting, as is the overall elastic strap due to it being too thin, which allows it to bind and twist up. I wish this strap was a little wider.
For comparison, let’s see how the external strap compares to the TROVE Cash Wrap. The TROVE Cash Wrap elastic is much wider which makes it easier to handle and prevents it from easily binding or twisting. I really prefer this over the smaller one used in the FOCX wallets.
Let’s look at the difference between the R1 Minimalist, R2 Accountant and R3 Purist. The R1’s distinguishing feature is a little notch in the front, otherwise it looks the same as the R2 and R3. Once opened it has a quick access card slot right up front. If we look at the R2 Accountant, it has a quick access card slot too, but opens up on the side, allowing for cash, folded once, to be stored. But the R3 Purist is really made for cash, then cards. It opens up twice, revealing the cash wrap function, in addition to card storage like the R1 and R2.
If we compare it to the TROVE Cash Wrap, the difference is that the TROVE actually has the ability to do a quick access card slot from the exterior before you have to remove the strap. You do not have that option with the Purist. With the Purist, you have to remove the strap to get access to cards, there’s no quick access slot. When opened, both wallets unfold twice, revealing the cash wrap. The TROVE has a little pouch for coins, which are held in place due to the folds of the wallet, preventing items from falling out. You can see the opening and how this is maintained and so both wallets are very similar, just slightly different in functionality. Personally, I prefer the elastic on the TROVE Cash Wrap. All FOCX wallets maintain the same footprint only varying slightly on how they function from each other. For the final score. For quality, a 4. Price, a 3. Features, a 3. It does what it’s supposed to do. Usability, a 4. Nice ease of use despite issues with the elastic I mentioned, and perception, a 4. That gives us a final score of 3.7 out of 5.
