Many of you are familiar with Popov Leather. They’re in British Columbia, Canada. We have their 5 Card Bi-Fold wallet with us today and it smells so good and it’s not even out of the box yet.
The flexibility and soft feel on the wallet is great. It feels like it’s already broken in. And if I put my finger under the card slot and move it around, you begin to see a visual change in the look of the leather. That’s called pull up. It’s from the tannins and the oils used in this Horween veg tanned leather, just beautiful.
For features it has a quick access card slot on the exterior of the wallet, which is an excellent feature any wallet should have as it provides a quick tap access location for credit cards, hotel keys, bus passes, etc. In the case of this wallet, this is the fifth card slot.
And another thing to note is there is NO RFID. Just pure, lovely golden leather. So if we move into the interior here, we can see that we have four card slots. On the interior we have 4 additional card slots. All could be used for not only cards, but also cash folded twice.
Reasonable carry is eight cards. I had five in there and it seemed to be okay. The two larger euro notes, the 100 and the 15 euro, and they didn’t fit, too tall, but the 20 and less euro notes work just fine. And, of course, dollars fits just fine, but it’s a no on Yen. The company recommends up to nine cards and up to ten bills.
The Popov 5 Card wallet is designed and manufactured in Canada, it’s made from a full grain veg tanned Horween Derby leather, and it comes in four colors. It’s hand-sewn with tiger thread, lightly burnished, with polished edges. The internal rear slot leather doesn’t traverse all the way down the back. It appears to be a mistake, but it’s not. It assists in keeping the cards separated within the two slots, while not adding additional bulk to the wallet. Similar considerations are made by other makers when trying to reduce the size, weight, or thickness of internal leather components of wallets versus increasing the thickness and usability of the wallet.
From a usability perspective, it’s very soft, almost like it’s broken in. Very good dimensions, which facilitates ease of insertion and extraction of cards. There’s not a lot of wasted leather or excess, which you can find in some wallets, it’s comfortable to use without being too big.
It measures 4.17 x 2.9 x .4, and weighs 44 grams. Started in 2013 by Ryan and Jill Popov, Popov Leather grew from Ryan trying to find the perfect wallet. That’s what drives most makers one degree or another which then helps move it from a hobby to, in Ryan’s case, a thriving business. They have a very infectious feeling of family, they enjoy the work they do every day, and they keep quality front and center with all their products.
One item which I’ve mentioned many times in the past is Popov Leathers gauntlet RFID card. Instead of worrying about an RFID wallet, which is terrible, just get a card, put it in a wallet and you’re protected if you are still concerned there’s a problem. They also have a large selection of other leather products from notebook covers, watch straps, key chains, EDC pouches, as well as dog collars, camera straps, even cord organizers, and so much more. They have a 90 day exchange policy and a lifetime warranty on this product.
Now let’s get into the final score. For quality, a 5, price, a 3, features, a 3, usability, a 4, and perception, a 5. That gives us a final score of 4.2 out of 5.
Handmade and using Horween leather, all Popov Leather wallets are sized well and built to last a lifetime.
