JJ Leathersmith Christopher Wallet Review: Old Designs, New Roads

JJ Leathersmith has recently undergone a transformation, rebranding as Oldis Road. While the brand’s new direction is bold, we’re taking a close look at two of their older—but very distinct—wallets: the JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet and its sibling, the Tony. These designs are no longer in production, but they represent some of the best craftsmanship from the original JJ Leathersmith line. The original wallet, Lucais, is the basis for the new “Oldis One” version being sold.

And even though they’ve been retired, we think the JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet deserves its own spotlight—especially if you can still snag one before they vanish completely. Let’s dive in.

Unboxing and First Impressions

Taking the Christopher and Tony wallets out of their sleeves reveals craftsmanship rooted in rustic charm. Both wallets share a similar structure, borrowing heavily from what was formerly called the Lucas—now rebranded as the “Oldis One.”

The JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet stands out instantly with its unique security flap. It feels like a hidden gem, offering a level of protection rarely found in minimalist wallets. The Tony, in contrast, has a designated AirTag slot built right in, making it an ideal companion for the tech-savvy or travel-heavy wallet carrier.

Both wallets give off a rugged yet refined vibe, the kind you’d expect from full-grain veg-tanned leather. And yes—the smell is fantastic. That earthy aroma is a telltale sign of quality hide and traditional tanning methods.

Card and Cash Test

Here’s where things get interesting. JJ Leathersmith recommends up to 8 cards and 15 bills for both wallets. We pushed it to 10 cards during testing and found the Christopher handled them well—though taller international currencies were a bit tight.

The JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet is designed with quick access in mind. You can tuck the flap behind and slide out a card in one smooth motion. That’s convenience baked into the structure. However, stuffing it with too much cash causes the tuck flap to pull loose. It’s not a dealbreaker, but something to watch if you’re carrying thick cash stacks.

On the Tony side, the AirTag feature adds bulk and makes the card slot slightly less flexible. You’re trading a little slimness for peace of mind, especially useful if you’re the type who misplaces wallets.

Construction Details

Both wallets are handmade in Ecuador using full-grain, vegetable-tanned Vata leather. The entire production process—from tanning to dying—is done in-country. And the craftsmanship is clearly top-tier.

  • Waxed polyester thread holds everything together
  • Stitching is tight, straight, and reinforced in all the right spots
  • Lightly burnished edges give it a clean but rustic appearance

In the JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet, the security flap is stitched into the front card slot, giving it a layered, functional feel. Both designs use a thinner leather cut, keeping the profiles relatively sleek despite the folded cash wrap.

Design Details

From a design standpoint, the Christopher and Tony are nearly twins—but with specific differences that cater to different users.

JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet:

  • Security slit flap that tucks into the front slot
  • Prioritizes quick-access and secure closure
  • Great for minimalists who want a touch more safety

Tony wallet:

  • Built-in AirTag compartment (adds leather layer and bulk)
  • Otherwise mirrors the Christopher layout

Both feature:

  • Two internal card slots (one full, one partial)
  • Rear cash wrap that folds neatly over the contents

The choice between them really comes down to preference—secure closure vs. AirTag functionality.

Usability

In daily use, the JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet feels like a trustworthy, no-fuss companion. Once broken in, the leather flexes comfortably while holding its shape.

  • Cards slide in and out without too much effort
  • Cash remains folded and secure—unless you really overstuff it
  • Tuck flap holds well with a normal loadout

The Tony’s AirTag slot is clever, but it contributes to a slightly chunky profile when fully loaded. That said, it’s still pocketable and performs well in practical use.

We measured the weight of a fully loaded Tony at 0.88 ounces (26g)—a little thick, but still manageable for front pocket carry.

Final Score

Quality

5/5 – Full-grain veg-tanned leather, tight stitching, and thoughtful handcrafting make this a standout.

Features

3/5 – Limited to basic wallet functions with a few niche additions like the security flap or AirTag pocket.

Usability

4/5 – Easy to use, but the flap can be fussy if overstuffed, and the Tony feels bulkier with an AirTag.

Perception

3/5 – The brand’s rebranding is ambitious but uncertain. We hope these models make a comeback or inspire future designs.

Final Score is 4/5.

Final Verdict

The JJ Leathersmith Christopher wallet may no longer be in production, but it’s still a compelling piece of leatherwork. It balances old-school craftsmanship with clever design details like the secure flap. If you can find one still in stock—or convince the Oldis Road team to make a custom piece—you’ll be owning a rare piece of the brand’s legacy. Whether you’re a minimalist wallet lover or a fan of handmade goods, the Christopher delivers lasting appeal and thoughtful functionality.
