During last year an interesting Kickstarter campaign for a wallet called Novel Bookwallet with a clever presentation took place. It is the World’s First Bookwallet. And if anyone is wondering why, it is actually what it says, ‘a Bookwallet’. The Bookwallet reviewed has the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as the cover choice, but there are 28 other book titles to choose from.
Looking at the construction, it is sewn on the interior piece, but not to the backboard piece. On the interior, there are four slits that run into each other as cards are inserted, but they do have a piece of fabric right in between each card and a rear slot for additional cards or cash on the right hand side. So in total this Bookwallet has six slots.
Concerning the card and cash insertion, carry cards for this wallet is four, with a reasonable six cards. The company makes no recommendation on the number of cards or cash that can be inserted.
The exterior of this Bookwallet is where the uniqueness lies. The interior is not that unique when it comes to what it provides, but it is made from a vegan-friendly, non-plastic leather, and the front is made of cloth. It is bound over a hard backer board, and this is the intent of its creator as he wanted it to look like an actual book. Therefore, having a cloth-bound portion on the exterior is where most of the attention was placed. The interior wallet material is glued to the backer board which creates durability concerns.
Designed in the United States and made in China. A high price unless licensing is involved. This Bookwallet is easy enough to use, but the hard backer board is stiff and the corners are quite sharp and pointy, possibly becoming uncomfortable in your pocket. It measures 4.25 x 3 x 0.7”, and weighs 42 grams.
The story about this wallet came from the owner chronically misplacing his wallet and then eventually finding it in his car. As most of us would have realized, a wallet out in the open in the car makes it a tempting target for theft. Therefore, his idea was that if the wallet looked like something else, then nobody would have touched it. So that is where he came up with the idea of just making it look like a book.
The Novel Bookwallet’s final score is 1 for quality. It is not impressive with the materials, and it is not expected to last long under normal usage of wallet; price a 2, as it is a little high, especially for what it gives, again probably they deserve a break for the fact that there might be licensing involved; features and usability receive a 3 each, it still works despite having some pointy bits that may affect the pocket; and perception scores a 3, there is some good effort put in it. The final score of the Novel Bookwallet is 2.2 out of 5, yet another interesting and unique wallet.
